Felicity sat on the porch with her grandmother. When they’d returned home from dinner, she’d intended to go to bed and curl up with a good book but the restlessness she’d been experiencing the past few days had returned full force. Preferring company to being alone, she’d joined her grandmother.
“Your grandpa used to call that a lover’s moon,” Thelma said, her gaze resting on the sliver of silver in the night sky. “He’d say it was just bright enough to light the way to my door but not so bright we couldn’t have our privacy.”
Felicity smiled. “I never thought of grandpa as being so romantic.”
“He had his moments.”
Felicity felt a nudge of envy and her restlessness increased.
The sound of a car interrupted the stillness of the night. “I wonder who that could be?” Thelma peered at the road. A frown creased her brow when the car slowed, then turned into their driveway. “Looks like Lucas.”
Felicity scowled. “What could he want?” As the car came to a stop and the engine was shut off, she rose. “I’m sure that whatever he’s come for involves you and not me. I’m going inside.”
“Felicity, you can’t keep running away from me forever,” Lucas called out, quickly climbing out of the car and striding toward the porch.
She paused with her hand on the door and turned back to regard him haughtily. “I was under the impression that you preferred not to speak to me.”
“You were standoffish toward my granddaughter all during dinner,” Thelma confirmed, watching him suspiciously. “Never could abide a man who blew hot or cold depending on his mood.”
Lucas leveled his gaze on her. “My son has chosen your granddaughter for his mother. He’s been rejected by his biological mother, and I don’t want him going through a similar experience once again. So I figured I should have a private talk with Felicity before I pursued her any further.”
Felicity glared at him. “I am not interested in being pursued by you or any man, and I most certainly would not consider marrying a man merely for the sake of his son. As I told Mark, I want to be his friend but I will go no further.”
Lucas turned to her.’ “If we marry, it will not be only for my son’s sake.”
The heat in his eyes caused her blood to race. Her jaw tensed. She’d played the fool once but never again. “I find your renewed show of interest in me a little hard to believe. You had no trouble ignoring me all during dinner.”
“You’re wrong. I had a very hard time ignoring you during dinner.”
Her scowl deepened. “You admit you were trying to ignore me?”
The heat in his eyes grew more intense. “I have always been in control of my emotions. Even as a teenager, I never let them rule my judgment. But every time I look at you, I have the most lecherous thoughts.”
Felicity found herself picturing him nibbling on her earlobe and her blood again threatened to race. “I’m really not interested,” she said stiffly.
